a bluebird once

I saw that little creature...once,

a drop of mystic blue. My eyes
held it in that wordless distance,
stretching out from bird to me
and telescoping wonder thrall.

It seemed to be a blue tear hung
in volumed space, in rusted time.
Until that feathered, godly riddle
flew from summer's meadow box
and disappeared without a trace.

I saw a bluebird once, then gone.
I quiver still in colored hope.
