came out of nowhere, went to elsewhere

Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 was so groundbreaking, so astonishing that there can never be enough thought, said, written about it. Not only owing to its departure from traditional form and gesture. What it is all by itself, within its own terms -- how it goes to unique places that are consistent with self-imposed laws of generation.

Because of this symphony, a new vocabulary of composition came to general consciousness. From its example, new psychological maps could be produced, new aesthetic energies discovered and tapped by others.

In effect and substance, Symphony No. 3 is a grand fantasia, cconstructive logic blended into expressive compulsion. The shapes of this symphony's instinctive development stand as profound examples of musical imagination.
